Years ago there were places you could visit in the Texas Hill Country and feel like you had stepped back in time to a simpler, quieter era. Places where you could let your body relax as you sat on the banks of a cool, spring-fed stream listening to the water rush over the smooth river rocks or sit in a comfortable lounge chair at night, gazing at more stars than you have seen since you were six!
Did you ever wonder if such a place still exists? Well it does and it is called Utopia on the River! Located near the little town of Utopia, Texas, this bed and breakfast lodge is a year-round vacation destination with mild winters and plenty of sunshine. Nestled on the banks of the Sabinal River, Utopia on the River has 700 feet of river frontage with a swimming pool and hot tub for your enjoyment. Check out our video below.
There are both exotic and domestic wildlife for viewing throughout the Sabinal Canyon. Depending upon when you visit, you may see Axis and Whitetail Deer, thoroughbred Horses, Hummingbirds, Lightning Bugs, Wild Turkeys and Wild Hogs, so be sure to bring your cameras with you. Utopia on the River is located close to Garner State Park, Lost Maples State Natural Area and Bandera, the "Cowboy Capital of the World". Many of our guests like to stay at Utopia on the River and drive to Leakey and Concan to float the Frio River. Other activities our guests enjoy are the Frio Bat Flight, Trail Rides and Utopia Golf Course. For more information check out our Activities and Specials Page. After a full day of fun and adventure, it is relaxing to return to the Sabinal Canyon and Utopia on the River for a peaceful evening with less crowds and less stress!
A breakfast buffet is served in the Great Lodge each morning with tempting dishes such as Baked Apple and Cinnamon French Toast, Rancher Scrambled Eggs with Sauteed Onions, Green Bell Peppers, Cheese and Tomatoes, Country Style Fried Potatoes, Hot Peaches and Biscuits along with pots of steaming hot coffee, Apple and Orange Juices, Milk and assorted Herbal Teas and homemade Hot Chocolate.
A new movie hit the big screen on September 2nd titled "Seven Days in Utopia" and the big news about this movie is that it was filmed almost entirely in and around our town. The movie is based on Dr. David L. Cook's popular book titled "Golf's Sacred Journey: Seven Days at the Links of Utopia" and is about a talented young pro-golfer played by Lucas Black and his encounter with an eccentric Utopia rancher played by Robert Duvall.
We are thrilled about this movie, and we want you to know about it because early in the first chapter of the book Utopia on the River is mentioned as the place where Luke stays while he is in Utopia. Also, Dr. Cook, one of the country's top sports and performance psychology consultants, has for many years conducted seminars at our Lodge, and has become a good friend. For frequent guests to the area, you will recognize in the film such locations as the Lost Maples Cafe, the Utopia Golf Course and the beautiful Sabinal River upstream from the Lodge. Utopia on the River is home to the 3rd largest Bald Cypress tree in Texas. Measuring 29 feet around, the tree is approximately 860 years old and sits on the banks of the Sabinal River that runs behind the lodge and rooms. As you sit under its huge limbs and wonder what stories that old tree could tell of Texas history, you will be amazed at how relaxing the sound of the river and the waterfall can be.
